On the occasion of the European elections, a "virtual" touch screen appeared (or not, by the way :-) ) on the set. Live, the journalist Guillaume Daret manipulated in space a series of graphic data to decipher political information in real time.

This brand new editorial format, developed by the MediaLab de l'Information in partnership with the Rennes-based start-up Excense, is based on the technological concept of the green background to hide the screen frame, make the technical elements disappear and display only the essential information.

It is a totally new editorial offer combining virtual studio, augmented reality and tactile writing technologies to provide an innovative visualization of Information, with the capacity for immediate integration into any decor, for any occasion. An unprecedented opportunity to bring together the most modern graphic tools for the most ambitious journalistic sequences.

Exciting prospects

Initially, as a proof of concept, the format was used in its simplest version: the masked screen, coupled with a crane camera connected to the augmented reality system, which allowed for the integration of the evening's decor. It is a configuration that has the advantage of being transposable to all stage contexts. Regardless of the sets and graphic elements required, the practice will remain the same and the know-how of the users will only increase.

Several configurations are possible to adapt the format.

However, it must be possible to adapt the format to more complex and original subjects according to needs and wishes. We have already proposed several possible configurations, implementing for example, just to reveal a few ideas, virtual screens in the form of "glass plate", integrating if necessary special illustrations, the display and manipulation of interactive 3D objects and complementary elements in augmented reality...

Touch has become a major editorial signature

From the outset 3 years ago, the ambition of this novel tactile writing was, above all, based on a strong editorial principle, which guides the users' approach: the visual content is delivered more raw, shared live with the viewer. Its editorialization: decoding, analysis, commentary... by the journalist, is done in complete transparency, with a user-friendliness and interactivity never before offered. This is what ensures the success of the tool, a new, very human, direct relationship, a guarantee of objectivity recognised by the viewer.

The recent "virtual" evolution of the touch format has generated several tens of thousands of views on the networks and thousands of congratulatory messages. Within France Télévisions, too, expressions of interest are multiplying and many requests for the implementation of tactile modules are reaching the MediaLab.

All this is a strong recognition of the interest of this interactive and human editorial writing, more than ever a strong signature of France Télévisions' News.
